About Banana Microsatellite Database

Genus Musa is one of three genera in the family Musaceae that includes bananas and plantains which are monocotyledonous plants (Simmonds and Shepherd 1955). Banana is the common name for herbaceous plants of the genus Musa and for the fruit they produce. Its fruits, rich in starch, grow in clusters hanging from the top of the plant and are reported in various ranges of sizes and colors when ripe. Banana has an extraordinary significance to human societies and claims the fourth most important food in the world today (i.e. after rice, wheat, and maize) (Frison, Escalant et al. 2004). Banana is considered as second most popular fruit in India after Mango (BS Reddy). It is highly consumable fruit amid all classes of people because of its availability throughout the year, affordability due to reasonable cost, varietal range, taste, nutritive and medicinal values (Reddy et al., 2012). The plant is a source of food, beverages, fermentable sugars, medicines, flavorings, cooked foods, silage, fragrance, rope, garlands, shelter, clothing, smoking material, and numerous ceremonial and religious uses (Nelson, Ploetz et al. 2006). In nutrition, Banana is rich in vitamin C, B6, minerals and dietary fibre (Ojo, 2013). They are also a rich energy source, with carbohydrates accounting for 22-32% of fruit weight for banana and plantain (Nieman, Gillitt et al. 2012). The origination of banana is South East Asia including India as one of its center (Simmonds 1962). Banana are the developing world's fourth most important food crop (after rice, wheat and maize) in terms of gross value of production (Tripathi et al., 2004). The crop is grown in more than 100 countries throughout the tropics and sub-tropics, with an annual world production of around 98 million tonnes, of which around a third is produced in each of the African, Asia-Pacific, and Latin American and Caribbean regions (Frison et al., 1999). India estimates annual production of 265.09 Lakh tonnes of banana with major producing states like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Assam and Madhya Pradesh (National Horticultural database, 2015). India is also a leading exporter of banana in Asia with 36108 metric tonnes of total export in 2014 (NHDb, 2015).
